What You Need to Carry Freight in Australia: ABN, Insurance & Licences

Because you're carrying freight for payment, you're operating a business — which means you need an Australian Business Number (ABN). It's free to apply through the Australian Business Register (abr.gov.au), and shippers and platforms will expect you to have one.

If your turnover from the business reaches the GST threshold, you'll also need to register for GST. Many owner-drivers register for GST from the start; check with your accountant on what suits you.

You need a current Australian driver licence for the class of vehicle you'll operate — from a car licence for a small van up to LR, MR, HR, HC or MC for heavier rigid and articulated trucks. Make sure your class matches the truck you intend to run loads with.

If you're carrying certain goods or operating heavy combinations, additional accreditation or fatigue-management obligations under the Heavy Vehicle National Law may apply.

At a minimum you'll want vehicle insurance and public liability cover. Just as important is goods-in-transit (carrier's) insurance, which covers the freight you're carrying if it's damaged or lost — shippers increasingly expect it, and it protects you from a costly claim.
